Netflix Cancels This Successful Crime Drama after First Season
Netflix, the world’s largest streaming platform, has decided to cancel its latest and much-loved crime drama series ‘The Waterfront’ after just one season. Now the second season of this series will not be made as per the news. This decision brings disappointment for fans who were eagerly waiting to see the The Waterfront second season.

The information was shared by the successful web show’s creator and famous writer Kevin Williamson himself to the cast and crew members working in the series. This news has come just a couple of months after the release of the The Waterfront Season on June 19, 2025. Usually, platforms like Netflix look at the performance of a show for a few months before deciding its future, but in the case of ‘The Waterfront’, it seems that the platform made up its mind in haste.
Why Closing The Waterfront Show Decision is Surprising?
The most surprising part of the show cancellation is that ‘The Waterfront’ performed brilliantly in its first season in terms of numbers. Released on June 19, this series was among one of the most watched shows on the platform. The show remained in Netflix’s global top 10 list for five consecutive weeks. Not only this, the show was listed at number 1 spot in this list, and that too three times. It had a tremendous start with 11.6 million views in its first week of release, which is considered a dream performance for any new web series.
The Waterfront Better Than Ransom Canyon and Forever
‘Ransom Canyon’, show was recently renewed for a second season. It spent four weeks in the top 10 and was at number 2 with 9.4 million views in its first week. Another show, ‘Forever’ which has been renewed for 2025, also spent four weeks in the top 10 and was at number three with 6.7 million views. It is clear from these figures that ‘The Waterfront’ performed better than both these renewed series and still ended with first season.
‘The Waterfront’ also fared far better than the performance of other shows that Netflix has canceled after one season this year. Series like ‘Pulse’ and ‘The Residence’ also stayed in the top 10 for four weeks each, but their views were only 8.5 million and 8.8 million respectively, which is much less than ‘The Waterfront’s 11.6 million.
So why Netflix Cancels The Waterfront?
Now the biggest question is, what is the reason behind cancelling popular show the Waterfront? This might be the possible answer. Netflix never takes its renewal decisions based on views only. The platform also considers other factors such as ‘performance vs cost’. That is, is the cost incurred in making the show justified in comparison to the views and subscriber value it receives?
Apart from this, aspects like the possibility of awards, social media buzz, and reaching a specific class of audience are also important. But another most important criterion is the ‘completion rate’. This is the percentage that shows how many of the viewers who started the show eventually finished watching the entire series. Netflix never makes this figure public.
Although earlier this month some sources had reported that ‘The Waterfront’ had a ‘good’ completion rate, it is heard that Netflix felt that both the overall viewership and the completion rate were not enough for another season. Perhaps the production cost of the show was high in proportion to its performance which might be one among the reasons why The Waterfront show cancelled.
Being an outside studio show could also be a reason
Another important factor that could play a major role in this decision is that ‘The Waterfront’ is a show produced by an outside studio. It is produced by Universal Television, while shows like ‘Ransom Canyon’ and ‘Forever’ are Netflix’s own productions. It is believed that Netflix’s renewal threshold may be a little higher for shows produced by outside studios. However, this might not be the exact reason because two other shows from Universal TV, ‘The Man on the Inside’ and ‘Four Seasons‘ have already received quick renewals on Netflix.
The Waterfront Story
The Waterfront series is built on a complex foundation of power, greed, family legacy and dark secrets. It revolves around the family based in the fictional town of Havenport, North Carolina. For decades, the family has ruled the town, dominating everything from the local fishing industry to the city’s restaurant scene. But now their empire is crumbling. As family patriarch Harlan Buckle (played by Holt McCallany) recovers from two heart attacks, his wife Belle (Maria Bello) and son Kane (Jake Weary) are willing to do anything to keep the family business afloat and they descend into a deeper darkness.
As their efforts spiral out of control and enter treacherous waters, Harlan is forced to take charge once again. In the midst of all this, the family’s daughter Bree (Melissa Benoist) – who is struggling with a drug addiction herself and has lost custody of her son – finds herself caught up in an extremely complicated relationship.
Star Cast

The star cast features strong actors like Rafael L. Silva, Humberly Gonzalez, Danielle Campbell and Brady Heppner in pivotal roles. Kevin Williamson and Ben Fast serve as executive producers under the Outerbanks Entertainment banner.
Netflix’s Renewal Strategy:
Over the past eight months, Netflix has renewed nearly 20 new scripted series for second seasons. These include shows as diverse as Warner Bros.’ Untamed and Running Point, Twentieth Television’s Nobody Wants This, Department Q, Beauty in Black, Ransom Canyon, Forever, North of North, The Vince Staples Show, animated show Devil May Cry, and Canadian series Bette and Geek Girl. It is clear from this list that Netflix’s strategy is to create content for different genres and audiences, and canceling some shows in the process is an integral part of their business model.
