American TV Personality and actress Whoopi Goldberg has once again made headlines. But this time it is not for any of her film projects, but for Donald Trump’s latest speech at the United Nations General Assembly and the subsequent controversy. The “The View” co-host, calling President Trump’s speech at the UN inappropriate. She also questioned Trump’s ability to perform his official duties and called for the 25th Amendment to be invoked.
Goldberg’s Concerns and Trump’s UN Address
Goldberg expressed her concerns on last Wednesday’s episode, saying, “He had the opportunity to do much more than he did, and now [world leaders] don’t take him seriously. I’m concerned.” She emphasized that if her opponent, Joe Biden, had performed similarly, his competence would have been questioned in media and political circles. Goldberg’s statement came based on Donald Trump’s speech in which he told world leaders that their countries were “going to hell,” targeted London Mayor Sadiq Khan, and mentioned his hotel business.
What’s the connection between “questioning eligibility” and the 25th Amendment?
When Whoopi Goldberg asked, “What’s the amendment?”, co-host Sunny Hostin clarified, “When you start questioning someone’s eligibility, that’s really the 25th Amendment.” So, what is the 25th Amendment? In short, It is present in the US Constitution as the process for when the president is unable to perform the duties of office. It covers everything from the president voluntarily relinquishing power temporarily (such as during medical surgery) to a majority vote by his Cabinet and the Vice President certifying that the president is unable to perform the duties. Goldberg was referring to this latter scenario.
A series of controversies at the United Nations: From Escalators to Teleprompters

In addition to the speech, Trump’s visit to the United Nations was also faced several technical glitches. There were problems in the escalator on which the President and First Lady Melania were riding stalled. Later, the teleprompter also malfunctioned during the speech.
Trump Spoke on Truth Social
Trump expressed his anger at Truth Social. He called these incidents “deliberate sabotage” and demanding an immediate investigation. However, UN Secretary-General spokesman Stephane Dujarric attributed the stalling of the escalator to Trump’s own videographer, who was running fast ahead of him and may have inadvertently activated the safety mechanism. The responsibility for the teleprompter also rested with the White House.
The Debate Over the 25th Amendment as a Political Weapon
Goldberg’s reference to the 25th Amendment is not new. During Trump’s tenure, opponents have frequently invoked it as a basis for his behaviour and rhetoric. This amendment has historically been a serious and rare measure, invoked only for medical reasons. Goldberg’s statement indicates that Trump’s performance at a global forum like the United Nations, in the eyes of some of his critics, was inconsistent with the dignity and effectiveness of the presidency. On “The View,” Sunny Hostin also criticized Trump’s “inflammatory rhetoric about immigration” and “lies” during his speech.
