“Anora” wins Hollywood directors and producers Awards to become Strong in Oscar race
Hollywood movie directors and producers on Saturday declared “Anora” as the best film of the year. This new achievement has further strengthened the dominance of the film in the upcoming Oscar awards race. The film directed by Sean Baker is a black comedy, based on the turbulent love story of an erotic dancer. It has won the top awards of the prestigious Directors Guild of America (DGA) and Producers Guild of America (PGA). This achievement has come just a day after the film won the major award of American critics.
Sean Baker’s reaction to the win of Anora
53-year-old director Sean Baker, while accepting the award at the DGA Gala held in Beverly Hills said, “My imposter syndrome is skyrocketing right now!” He did not forget to thank his producers at that time, saying, “It was almost impossible to make a $6 million movie and shoot it on film in New York City in 2023, but we did it.”
In a light mood, Baker also said that while campaigning in Hollywood’s endless awards season, he felt for the first time that he was “actually working.” He said, “I’m playing and feel like the luckiest person in the world, because I’m doing what I wanted to do since I was five years old.”
The journey of “Anora”: From Cannes to Oscars
“Anora” won the Palme d’Or, the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival, in May, but recently this Hollywood movie was behind other films. Movies like “Emilia Perez” were ahead of it in terms of Oscar nominations. But, now after winning the DGA and PGA awards on Saturday and title of Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards on Friday the film has become a favorite for the Oscars awards which are going to be held on March 2, 2025 this year.
Why is this win special for the director?
In the history of Oscar awards, 19 of the last 21 years, the directors who won the DGA Award have also won the Best Director title at the Oscars in the same year. These include the last two years’ winners “Oppenheimer” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once”. Therefore, this win of “Anora” is a strong and positive indication for the movie. It has raised the chances of it in the Oscar race.
PGA Award increased the race for victory
Not only DGS but, “Anora” also won the top award at the PGA Awards held in Los Angeles on Saturday. This win has further strengthened the film’s chances of winning in the Oscar race. The PGA Awards are considered an important indicator for the Oscars because past history shows that most of the PGA-winning films have also achieved success at the Oscars.
Sean Baker Did not show the film to Mother
Sean Baker expressed his gratitude to his mother, saying that she always supported his career. However, he also accepted that he is happy that his mother did not see his new film, which is quite graphic. Baker’s films are usually focused on topics such as sex work and pornography.
What are the chances of Anora in the Oscar race after winning Hollywood directors and producers Awards?
“Anora” has now strengthened its place in the Oscar race. Winning the hearts of Hollywood directors and producers means the film is getting attention. This film of Sean Baker has not only become a critic’s choice, but it has also caught the attention of the audience. Now it will be interesting to see whether “Anora” will be able to show the same magic at the Oscars and win the top award on March 2, 2025.
