Heads of State Review – Action-Packed Political Comedy Idris Elba and John Cena Shine
Amazon Prime’s new film “Heads of State” released on July 2, 2025 is a high-octane political action comedy that takes a funny look at US-British political tensions. Idris Elba plays the role of UK Prime Minister while wrestler turned to actor John Cena is the US President. This New Hollywood film shows the story of the two leaders clashing, then unexpectedly coming together, and fighting a global crisis together.
Story of the film? From political confrontation to action
The story of Heads of State film starts with scenes of tension between US President Jason Derringer (John Cena) and British PM Thomas Clarke (Idris Elba). Derringer, who has been in office for just six months, is angry with Clarke because he did not help him much in winning the election. At the same time, Clarke, who has been in power for six years and is losing popularity, dismisses Derringer as an arrogant ex-action hero.
Meanwhile, a joint press conference goes awry and the announcement of a NATO-supported energy initiative falls flat. The two leaders have to sit together on Air Force One to control the PR disaster. But the plane is attacked and they are caught in a dangerous situation.
Nuclear Threat and Fire of Revenge
It turns out that NATO’s energy initiative is actually stolen technology from a nuclear scientist, which NATO has seized to prevent a major attack. Behind it is Victor Gradov (Rory Considine), a dangerous arms dealer, who is bent on avenging his son’s death.
The film opens with an action-packed sequence where MI6 agent Noel (Priyanka Chopra) tries to capture Gradov in the middle of Spain’s Tomatina Festival, but the mission fails. Later, when the President and PM’s plane crashes, they are pursued by Gradov’s dangerous henchmen Sasha and Olga (Alexander Kuznetsov and Katrina Durden).
Style Resembles of 2000s action films
“Heads of State” is reminiscent of the summer blockbusters that used to be hits in the 2010s, such as “Olympus Has Fallen” and “White House Down”. But interestingly, Amazon MGM put it straight on streaming instead of releasing it in theaters, which probably reflects their doubts about the film’s commercial appeal.
Great Performance of the Star Cast
The biggest highlight of Heads of State film is the chemistry and action of its star cast. John Cena, who has reached Hollywood from professional wrestling, fits perfectly in the role of a comic and action hero. At the same time, Idris Elba makes the film even stronger with his charismatic style and action skills. Priyanka Chopra once again plays a badass agent in her “Quantico” style.
The brilliant supporting casts Richard Coyle (PM’s aide), Sarah Niles (President’s advisor) and Stephen Root (hacker double agent) have also given stellar performances.
Director Ilya Naishuller’s action style
The film’s director Ilya Naishuller, who has made films like “Nobody” and “Hardcore Henry”, has retained the fast-paced action sequences and witty dialogues in this film as well. The film has many funny scenes, like the PM’s smoke bomb failing or Noel being an expert in martial arts.
Could the film have worked in theaters?
Generally such wonderful movies are first released in theaters and later on OTT platform. Heads of States is available to watch on Amazon. The streaming platform probably missed a big opportunity by releasing it directly on streaming. Stars like Idris Elba, John Cena and Priyanka Chopra have huge fan followings not only in the United states but also in the different parts of the world. With such combination, the film could have done well at the box office. Especially, when the film’s ending sets up for a sequel.
Is it Worth to Watch Heads of State?
“Heads of State” is a full entertainment package that offers a mix of action, comedy and political satire. If you are fan of combo of John Cena and Idris Elba, then this movie is perfect for you. However, next time Amazon should consider releasing such movies in theatres!
